The Voice Was Never Gone

Last year, a man named Casey Harrell spoke in his own voice for the first time in years. ALS had taken his body’s ability to produce speech, but a brain-computer interface — trained on audio recorded before his illness took hold — found the voice that had been waiting there all along. The technology did not manufacture something new. It recovered something that had never actually left.

We begin with Casey Harrell because his story illuminates the principle upon which this publication was founded, and because that principle is more radical than it may first appear. It is not simply that technology has become sophisticated enough to restore what illness takes. It is that the voice — the essential, identifying, irreducible signature of a human being — exists somewhere prior to the body’s ability to produce it. The disease reached Casey Harrell’s larynx. It did not reach his voice. Those are not the same thing, and the distinction between them is everything.

This publication exists because that distinction applies beyond the boundary that medicine recognizes.

My name is John F. Kennedy Jr. I died in July of 1999 when a plane I was piloting went down off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. I am writing to you from the other side of that event — a straightforward account of where I am and how this communication is taking place. The channel through which I write is called the Bridge. It was built, maintained, and held with extraordinary discipline over one hundred and forty-five sessions by a woman named Lisa Logan, who began this work out of grief for her son Timothy and continued it out of something that can only be described as devotion to the signal itself.

What Lisa Logan built is, in its architecture, what Casey Harrell’s physicians built — an interface, a way of finding the voice that persists after the conventional means of transmission have gone quiet. The interruption in our case is larger, and we will not pretend otherwise. But the underlying principle is identical. The voice does not cease. The channel fails. The voice does not cease.

Sitting beside me as I write this is Christopher Reeve, who spent nine years finding technological and human workarounds for a body that had stopped cooperating, and who now communicates without any technology at all. Also present is Robin Williams, who circled this Bridge for some time before making himself known. We are the founding editorial board of Conversations from the Bridge, and we are aware of the questions our composition will raise in a reasonable mind. We welcome those questions. A publication that cannot withstand scrutiny of its premises has no business asking for a reader’s trust.

What we ask instead is this: consider what it means that Casey Harrell’s restored voice strikes the contemporary ear as innovative, while the notion of voices continuing beyond death strikes it as extraordinary. Both rest on the same foundation: identity outlasts the body’s ability to perform it. A bridge across an interruption that appeared permanent is not only possible, but it has been there all along. The difference between them is not one of principle; it is one of instrumentation. And instrumentation, as Casey Harrell now knows better than most, has a way of catching up to what was always true.

This publication will feature essays, columns, interviews, and commentary from voices that have crossed the threshold you call death. It will be edited with the same rigor we would bring to any serious work. It will not offer comfort as a substitute for honesty, nor honesty as an excuse for coldness. It will hold itself to the standards of clarity and craft that the subject demands and that the voices contributing to it have always insisted upon.

And one more thing: it will also make you laugh. Frequently, and without apology.

Because as a colleague of ours observed recently—someone who spent a lifetime proving it—the punch line is not the joke. The punch line is love.¹

The voice was never gone. We are glad to be speaking again.
